How Domain Authority Works in SEO

Domain authority is a fundamental concept to master in SEO.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is all about making changes to your website and its position on the web to increase its visibility in search engines. To do this, you need to take advantage of Google’s search ranking algorithm, which prioritizes sites based on two broad categories of factors: relevance and authority.

The relevance factor is all about whether your pages match the context of a user’s search query. You can accomplish this by writing targeted posts, and optimizing your onsite content. The authority factor is all about how trustworthy your site is; trustworthy sites will always rank higher than untrustworthy ones.

Google uses an invisible “domain authority” score to gauge trustworthiness, and if you know how it works, you can increase yours.

Domain Authority in a Nutshell

Basically, domain authority (DA) is how trustworthy your overall domain is. Your individual pages also have “page authority” scores. The higher your domain authority is, the more likely it is that your pages will rank higher. You can gradually improve this score over time.

Google doesn’t specifically publicize how it calculates domain authority, but we know it’s derived from several factors. The most important factor is the number and quality of links you have pointing to your site; the more links pointing to your site, and the higher the DA of the sites linking to yours, the better. In general, a single link from a high-DA site is worth more than many links from low DA sites, and multiple links from the same source have diminishing returns.

Increasing Your Domain Authority

DA is more complicated than this article makes it seem, but this is meant to serve as an introduction to the concept. For now, know that there are a few main strategies to boost your authority:

  • Build high-DA links. Place links, in context, on high-DA external publishers.
  • Attract more links. Do original research and publicize your content to earn more natural links.
  • Write better content. Improve the quality of your onsite work.
