3 Things You’ll Need to Research Before Launching an SEO Campaign

Research is necessary to maximize your SEO results.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is popular because of its accessibility, cost efficiency, and its potential to help your business get tons of inbound traffic. But there’s no guarantee your SEO strategy will be successful. In fact, most people who attempt SEO for the first time end up failing.

There are several reasons why an SEO campaign could fail. It could be underfunded. You could be working with an unreliable partner. You might have even been the victim of an unfortunately timed algorithm update.

But most of the time, SEO campaigns fail because their practitioners failed to do enough research before starting work.

If you want to see better results, you’ll need to research and understand the following, long before you follow through with your campaign:

  1. The competition. First, you’ll need to better understand your competition. Who are the main competitors in your market and how are they currently performing in Google search? What are the target keywords and phrases that they seem to be dominating and what are their unique selling points? You’ll need to find a way to avoid these competitors or surpass them – and hopefully, you’ll learn something from them in the process.
  2. Your target market. Who are the people you’re trying to reach? What are they looking for and what are the most important values they want in a company like yours? What keywords are they likely to search for and what related phrases are worth pursuing?
  3. Potential keywords. With the context you gleaned from your competitive and market research, you’ll have the knowledge necessary to perform more robust keyword research. Ideally, you’ll find keyword and phrase targets with high search volume, low competition, and high relevance to your brand; from there, you can incorporate these into your content and link building strategies.
